Play Priorities
The development of the Eketahuna Skatepark was a community-led initiative to provide youth in this small rural town on New Zealandâs North Island a place to connect and get active.
Playground Centre worked with the Eketahuna Community Group to come up with the design for the outdoor skatepark. It had to be a totally awesome facility that would attract skaters of all levels â from beginner to advanced. It had be safe, sturdy and durable, and it had to fit the location chosen by the community. But most of all, we wanted to create a skatepark that was unique to Eketahuna. Using a standard skatepark design as the starting point, we created a customised solution for the park, which is now a landmark in the town for locals and visitors alike.
Fun Solution
At Playground Centre, we believe that access to opportunities for physical activity is extremely important to a communityâs health and wellbeing. The Eketahuna Skatepark provides a destination for the townâs youth (and the young at heart) who are seeking some extra action in their lives.
The skateparkâs composite construction delivers the solid ride and feel skaters are looking for, while addressing the need to avoid concrete due to Eketahuna being situated in an earthquake-prone area. Our galvanised and stainless-steel structural finishes also deliver the low maintenance and long life that public works projects demand.
The skatepark includes a half pipe and a mini ramp as well as other features that give skaters a variety of options for honing their skills and developing tricks. And, if you donât have a âdeckâ (a skateboard) thatâs okay because the skatepark is designed to cater for BMX riders, rollerbladers and scooters.
One word: gnarly!
